Organization

CAIM’s activities around research, teaching and services are organized on four pillars:

Digitalization & AI Education

PILLAR I

CAIM provides tailored AI in Medicine education for medical doctors and engineers with a portfolio of augmented, competitive and purposefully designed post-graduate programs to prepare and equip students for Healthcare 4.0.

Network & Dissemination

PILLAR II

CAIM transmits trustworthy knowledge on AI in Medicine from business, law, philosophy and social sciences. This supports policy makers, educators and the general public by shaping the current debates on AI in Medicine with evidence based information.

Computational Infrastructure

PILLAR III

CAIM facilitates access and availability of computer infrastructure, computational and data resources to drive a coordinated initiative of digitalisation and AI research in the Bern Medical Hub. It draws on the existing computational clusters in Bern and finds needs-based solutions for multi-centric research approaches.

Research Project Fund

PILLAR IV

CAIM promotes technological innovation by identifying projects that have strong potential to be groundbreaking for future therapeutic and clinical approaches and a realistic and deliverable pathway to patient benefit. This includes proof-of-concept support, industry collaboration, clinical translation and commercialisation.

Embedded Ethics Lab

Ethical Guidance

CAIM’s embedded Ethics Lab provides guidance on ethical questions surrounding the application of artificial intelligence in medicine. Support for researchers and educators within CAIM covers the spheres of medical ethics, research ethics and public health ethics.

Diversity for AI in Medicine

Inclusion and different viewpoints in AI research

CAIM wants to strengthen diverse viewpoints in AI research for healthcare, both encouraging female and minority researchers to embark on an AI in medicine career and combatting biases in AI algorithm development. For this purpose a working group to foster inclusion and diversity in AI research for healthcare (DAIM) has been initiated in May 2022.
